Sabrina Ionescu's Nike Signature Shoe: The Story Behind the Sabrina Line

Apr 21, 2026

Sabrina Ionescu is used to firsts. Among a slew of high-grade accomplishments in her career to date, the 28-year-old California native helped the Oregon Ducks to their first women's NCAA Final Four appearance, was the first pick in the 2020 WNBA draft and led the New York Liberty to their first WNBA Championship.

So it's no great surprise that in 2023, she became the first women's pro basketball player to have a unisex signature shoe line with Nike.

Sabrina Ionescu shoes, much like her game and her career accomplishments, are designed for the very highest level of performance. The decision to make those shoes unisex — available in extended sizes to accommodate men with larger feet — reveals the confidence at the House of Swoosh that Ionescu represents a new generation of women hoopers, with a game and personality that has a unique and universal appeal.

The Birth of a New Era in Basketball Footwear

With the recent proliferation of shoe deals for women's basketball players, it's easy to forget that as recently as 2023, when the Sabrina 1 launched, Sabrina Ionescu was one of only three active WNBA players with a signature shoe deal. That number has since doubled and looks set to continue to grow.

In the meantime, Ionescu's signature sneakers have set a new standard for athlete-led basketball shoes. There are plenty of examples of women playing in men's signature shoes. Caitlin Clark, for example, is well known for her customized Kobes (at least until her own signature shoe is ready). But men playing in a woman's signature shoe? Not really a thing, until the Sabrina 1 launched as a genuinely unisex design, available in the full range of adult sizes and intentionally created to support both men and women on the court.

This gives the New York Liberty point guard another remarkable distinction: Sabrina Ionescu stats and footwear are both characterized by unique achievements.

Design and Performance: From the Sabrina 1 to the Sabrina 2

Sabrina's game is known for quick cuts and rapid acceleration. To keep up, her footwear needs superior traction and lightness. Sabrina Ionescu shoes aren't just good but were designed for maximum performance from the start.

The Sabrina 1 ranked high for traction and stability, maintaining comfort with an outstanding cushioning setup featuring full-length Nike React cushioning and a forefoot Zoom Air unit.

The Nike Sabrina 2 built on its predecessor's strengths, coming in 28 grams lighter than the Sabrina 1. This was achieved in part with a Cushlon 3.0 foam midsole — featuring for the first time in a Nike basketball shoe — held in a Cushlon foam carrier. The outsole also got an upgrade, with an "S"-inspired herringbone pattern to support multidirectional traction.

Symbolism and Storytelling in the Details

Nike Sabrinas also quickly distinguished themselves with an enthralling attention to detail and intricate symbolism. Both the Sabrina 1 and Sabrina 2, for example, feature patterning that pays tribute to Romanian embroidery in honor of Ionescu's family heritage.

On the Sabrina 1, a wraparound "i" runs through the outsole and up the heel. On the Sabrina 2, the focus shifts to Ionescu's first initial, with an "S" frame used as a motif on the upper and the "S"-inspired herringbone traction pattern.

Both shoes feature a tilted Swoosh on the medial side. The iconic logo's tail points skyward in reference to Ionescu's career achievements, consistently breaking through every barrier in her way.

On the Sabrina 1, a cored-out midsole on the medial side features the message "Anyone, Anywhere" — highlighting Ionescu's competitive spirit. On the Sabrina 2, an exposed Swoosh and dotted "I" on the outsole serve both as an initial and an exclamation point.

These hidden details add depth to the overall design, expanding to further symbolism and storytelling in unique colorways and collabs.

Cultural Impact and the Future of the Sabrina Line

NBA watchers counted more than 70 players wearing Sabrina 1s during the 2023-24 season. Stars like Jrue Holiday and Tyrese Haliburton trusted Sabrina's shoes. And the Sabrina 2 went bigger and better, said to be the second-most-worn shoe in the NBA for the 2024-25 season. The same analysis suggested the most popular shoe in the NBA that season was the Kobe 6 — a Caitlin Clark favorite.

Are women's basketball players leading the way for men's shoe choices? It certainly seems like the surging popularity of women's basketball has given rise to a generation of WNBA players with a universal appeal to match the game's top male stars.

The Ionescu x Nike collab has moved on to the Sabrina 3, further extending the line's reputation for exceptional lightness and traction. And the Sabrina line also offers "toe-to-head" styling with a full apparel line to complement the sneakers.
