Ken Griffey Jr. Nike Shoes: The History of the Air Griffey

Apr 17, 2026

When Ken Griffey Jr. Nike shoes launched in 1996, non-basketball athletes with signature shoe deals were still a relative rarity at the House of Swoosh. But the Seattle Mariners' star center fielder was a legit mid-90s sports icon who slotted in perfectly alongside Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders as part of Nike's burgeoning roster of stellar players from outside the world of hoops and hardwood.

Today, Ken Griffey Jr. is a first-ballot Hall of Fame legend, and the Air Griffey Max 1 — the first Nike shoe to bear his name — is a classic in its own right. Indeed, it's such a legendary sneaker that it's one of the few non-basketball shoes to get a special tribute from one of Nike's best-selling NBA lines: back in 2018, LeBron James released the LeBron 15 "Griffey," honoring the Air Griffey Max 1 OG "Freshwater" colorway.

The Birth of a Legend: The Air Griffey Max 1 Evolution

The Air Griffey Max 1 launched in 1996, turning heads with its visible Air cushioning and a striking midfoot strap (which Griffey himself insisted on) carrying The Kid's famous #24. The sneakers also stood out for their sweeping Swoosh logos on the toes and vertical Swooshes on the heel and tongue. The famous Swingman logo would arrive a little later in the Nike/Griffey relationship.

The shoe launched in three colorways. The Air Griffey Max 1 "Freshwater" and "Emerald" made memorable use of the Mariners' teal to accent black-and-white uppers. The "Varsity Royal" colorway is a brighter option, with a neon tint to the Air Max bubbles. It's sometimes tagged the Air Griffey's "forgotten colorway," since reviewers occasionally overlook its OG status.

Beyond the Diamond: Why Griffey Retro Styles Still Rule the Streets

The Air Griffey Max 1 had instant street style. It launched as a training shoe, but the upper is essentially identical to the cleated version Junior wore at the plate. This blending of athletic tech and street style was a little ahead of its time in 1996.

Thirty years later, the sneakers still have trendsetting appeal, this time as era-defining retro classics. As that LeBron 15 tribute demonstrated, the "Freshwater" colorway has staying power. And Nike has kept the iconic Air Griffey Max 1 relevant with regular retro releases for the OG colorways — the Varsity Royal retroed earlier this year — alongside updated and fresh designs for the silhouette.

Bold colorways, the distinctive 24 strap, and high-top profile give these shoes a bright, chunky '90s vibe. They are unmistakably Nikes from that mid-90s era when the House of Swoosh was at the forefront of sneaker style and performance.

Ken Griffey Jr. is one of just four first-ballot Hall of Famers who were also picked number one overall in the MLB draft. He's also one of very few athletes to have produced a Hall of Fame signature shoe with his first attempt.
