History of the Nike Y2K Collection

Jul 3, 2024

The end of the ’90s and the beginning of the 2000s were filled with tech advancements, velour, low-rise everything and butterfly motifs. For millennials, it remains a time filled with nostalgia. And for younger generations, Y2K streetwear is trending across social platforms as a way to express individuality.

Be Kind. Rewind.

To capitalize on the trend, Nike is bringing back some silhouettes reminiscent of the Y2K era. Here are three shoes in the Nike Y2K line to add to your collection:

Nike P-6000

The Nike P-6000 isn't a remake of a beloved icon. Instead, it’s a fresh design that borrows heavily from the aesthetics of the early 2000s. Released in 2019, the P-6000 draws inspiration from several Y2K-era Nike Pegasus silhouettes, particularly the Pegasus 25 and the 2006. A breathable mesh upper with real and synthetic horizontal and vertical leather overlays and leather Nike Swooshes evoke throwback vibes. This Nike Y2K shoe also features a chunky foam midsole with visible cushioning and colorways that give it a techy feel.

Nike Zoom Vomero

The Nike Vomero, however, was a powerhouse running sneaker back at the turn of the millennia. While it debuted in 1994, the shoe didn’t really come into its own until the early 2000s. The Zoom Air unit became a prominent design element, showcasing the technical aspect of the shoe. Introduced in 2011, the Nike Zoom Vomero+ 5 had a large feature that connected the shoe to an iPod — an admittedly clunky forerunner to streamlined Apple tracking devices to come.

The upper, often featuring a mix of mesh and synthetic materials, offered a lightweight feel with a layered, almost spaceship-like aesthetic. Bold color combos with metallic accents further cement the Y2K vibe, particularly along the side’s accordion-like plastic caging. A focus on comfort via features like Zoom Air, along with the resurgence of Y2K fashion, has fueled the Vomero's recent popularity.

Nike V2K Run

The Nike V2K Run is another fresh offering that rolled out in 2020, drawing inspo from the Nike Vomero 5. You can see the influence in the silhouette’s TPU overlays, sculpted midsole and cushioning. This running shoe remasters a mesh upper that’s light and airy, coupled with a dual-density foam midsole and translucent plastic accents along the quarter panels that nod to the Vomero. Flip through a Y2K-era running catalog, and you’ll find similar shoes, complete with chunky “Dad shoe” heels and metallic accents.
