The Colorblocked Style of Men’s Nike Dunks

Whether you’re scrolling your socials or just walking around town, there’s a good chance you’ve seen a pair of Nike Dunks on the feet of casual wearers. These basketball-turned-lifestyle sneakers are a classic choice if you’re trying to achieve a timeless aesthetic. Hibbett gives you the freedom to choose from Nike Dunk Low men’s styles and Dunk high cut kicks.

History of Nike Dunks for Men

Nike Dunks first hit the scene all the way back in 1985. While the sneakers looked like Air Jordan 1s — and basically grew up alongside them — the Dunks were a more accessible way for fans to support their favorite college teams. In fact, Nike specifically created collegiate colorways as part of its “Be True to Your School” campaign. The seven OG NCAA-specific colorways included Villanova, Iowa, St. John’s, Kentucky, Michigan, Syracuse and UNLV — all teams that dominated in the basketball realm back then.

But these fan-fave basketball shoes weren’t confined solely to the arena. By the late ’90s and early 2000s, the Dunks had made their way first into the skateboarding scene and eventually found a captive audience with sneakerheads. In fact, Nike even took notice and manufactured the Nike Dunk SB to specifically cater to its skater fans.

A One-Two Punch of Style & Comfort

Also, the architect of the Air Jordan 1, Peter Moore, first launched the Nike Dunk High men’s shoes as the OG and eventually dropped the Dunk Low, both of which continue to enjoy popularity.

Enduring Style Notes

Premium leather typically dresses the upper of each pair of Nike Dunks. Whether you choose a high or low cut silhouette, you’ll note the signature perforations fanned across the toebox in a sunrise-like pattern. Leather overlays rest atop the upper, creating structure along the edges of the sneaker and forming the lacing system while introducing color.

Preppy Colorways

Looking for varsity vibes in your kicks? Borne from college and university colors, these shoes will satisfy any fan or sneakerhead with their cool, colorblocked approach. Perennially popular color schemes include the men’s Nike “Panda” Dunks that blend a white leather upper with black overlays.

Differences from the Air Jordan 1

Though strikingly similar in looks, the Nike Dunks men’s shoes can easily be differentiated, even by the untrained eye. AJ 1s have an encapsulated Air-Sole unit and a more plushly padded interior, and the Dunks are slightly less tapered than the Jordans, with more room in the toebox. The Dunks’ Swooshes on both sides of the quarter panels join together at the heel, capped with a small Nike heel tab. The AJ 1 Swooshes also meet at the heel, but they’re put together lower and bisected with a small, non-branded tab. The Jordans also feature the iconic Wings logo stamped near the ankle.

Are Men's Nike Dunks Different Than Women’s?

Yes and no. Nike Dunks for men are sized differently than women’s Dunks, so if you see a colorway not available in men’s, you can use a size chart to convert the sneakers to your correct size. Otherwise, Nike Dunks are considered unisex sneakers, and both men’s and women’s editions have the same features.

How to Style Nike Dunk Low for Men?

The beauty of wearing Nike Dunk Lows lies in the shoes’ versatility. As a streetwear staple, you can pair them with graphic tees, a hoodie and joggers or jeans. For a more elevated fit, try non-distressed denim and a button-down. Or rock a pair of Nike men’s “Panda” Dunk Lows with a hoco or prom look.
